Mathematics Secondary Education

The Mathematics Secondary Education major offers students a comprehensive mathematics education while simultaneously training students to be certified to teach mathematics in New Jersey at the 6-12 grade levels.   This page lists the program documents and other information about the major.  For more information, please contact your advisor, Dr. Cathy Liebars (the mathematics education coordinator), or the department chair.

The Undergraduate Bulletin is the official list of major requirements. However, by following the list of requirements below will ensure that all graduation requirements are met. A total of at least 32 course units are required for graduation.


Mathematics Education Learning Goals

  1. Understanding Mathematics Content Knowledge
    1. Students will master the content knowledge needed to teach in the secondary schools.
    2. Students will also have the background in higher level mathematics that allow them to teach competently, and confidently.
  2. Making Connections
    1. Students will be able to make connections between higher level mathematics and K-12 mathematics.
    2. Students will be able to understand the scope and sequence of K-12 mathematics.
  3. Effective Utilization of Problem Solving
    1. Students will be problem- solving teachers who effectively utilize the experiences and skills in problem solving approaches in their instruction
  4. Ability to Communicate Clearly
    1. Students will be able to communicate mathematical ideas and concepts in clear and precise manner.
  5. Understand and Implement Standards and Recommendations for Teaching
    1. Students will be able to understand, and be capable of implementing and building upon the standards and recommendations for teaching mathematics suggested by professional organizations, research, departments of education, and schools districts.
  6. Utilize Research to Inform Classroom Practice
    1. Students will be able to read, interpret, implement, and utilize research about teaching mathematics including theories of learning to guide their classroom practice and teaching decisions.
  7. Effectively Utilize Technology in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics
    1. Students will be able to effectively utilize technology and determine how to meaningfully integrate technology in teaching mathematics.
  8. Appropriate Implementation of Activities and Instructional Strategies
    1. Students will be able to choose, adapt, and implement appropriate mathematical activities.
    2. Students will be able to use a variety of instructional strategies to help students of diverse abilities learn mathematics
  9. Motivate and Energize the Learning of Mathematics
    1. Students will be able to motivate, enrich, and energize the mathematics classroom by displaying their enthusiasm and interest in mathematics.
  10. Understand Principles and Implementation of Assessment
    1. Students will be able to understand the underlying principles of assessment and know how to use multiple means of assessment.

First Seminar Course (1 unit)

All students must take a first seminar course in their first year. If the First Seminar is in Category 1 of the Liberal Learning areas (see page 3), it will count towards that area’s requirements. All First Seminars are writing intensive and count towards the requirement in (3).

Academic Writing Requirement (1 unit, possibly 0)

A student must either take WRI 102: Academic Writing or be exempted from it.

Additional Writing Experiences

In addition to the academic writing requirement in (2), students must take three writing intensive courses. One of these courses is the First Seminar listed in (1) above. The second course is MTT 380 and the third course is SED 498.

Second Language Requirement (3 units, possibly 0, 1 or 2)

XXX 101, XXX 102, XXX 103.

Science Course (1 unit)

Either BIO 185, CHE 201, or PHY 201.

Other Liberal Learning Courses (3 units, possibly 2)

Two courses must be taken to satisfy the requirements of Category 1 of the Liberal Learning requirements and one course must be taken to satisfy Category 2. If the First Seminar is chosen in one of these areas, only two other courses will need to be taken to satisfy this requirement. Students should also try to satisfy the requirements in Category 4 of the Liberal Learning requirements if not already satisfied through other experiences. For example, the course “The Evolution of Middle Eastern Women Writers” would satisfy the Global Perspectives requirement as well as count as 1 unit towards the Category 1a requirement.

Information Literacy

On-line, non-credit course administered by the library staff (IDS 102).   Students must meet this proficiency prior to graduation, but are encouraged to do so as early as possible

These are courses that students can take without having to meet any requirements. You must take enough electives so that you meet the graduation requirement of 32 total units.

Note: If course requirements such as WRI 102 or second language are waived through placement or other means, then electives should be substituted to meet the 32 course unit total.

The Liberal Learning system defines graduation requirements in a broad set of learning categories. As a Mathematics: Secondary Education major, the Quantitative Reasoning and many other requirements are automatically met.

Students may count at most one course unit of independent study, guided study, or independent research courses as part of their options towards the major. Additional courses may be taken as electives, but will not count towards the major. When taking an independent study, guided study, or independent research course, a student’s course load should not be more than 4.5 course units. Independent study, guided study, or independent research courses may not be taken in order to improve a grade, or to replace a course that a student failed to sign up for.
